The first 10-20 levels or so you can just blitz through with mostly any gear you find on the ground. The first AOE skill you can unlock is Twin Cleave and you should get it ASAP. You should also put at least 1 point into every attack to try them out with the lowest Mana cost, Whirlwind requires maxing Vortex Slash, which is achievable by level 20.
